HYPE: Hosting Young Philosophy Enthusiasts

In today’s society where we have absolute polarization of politics and a mindset that changing opinions makes a person weak, Souhegan High School sees a need for a conference that can teach students the skills required for engaging in healthy discussion or debate. Ever since its debut in 2009, The HYPE conference has been a safe environment for students to practice speaking in front of people they don’t know and maybe don’t agree with, and we press upon those students the importance of entertaining thoughts different or contrary to their own. We hope to get the message out to as many people as we can, and we hope that our exponential growth from 110 participants to over 1000 participants from over 30 different schools today shows not only a need, but also an interest for better dialogue.

Not only is the conference an incredible experience for the students who attend, it is also a huge step up for Souhegan and Spaulding High School Seniors, as the conference is almost entirely student run, aside from our academic and faculty advisers. These Seniors have put in countless hours of their free time to produce a product that is comparable to the professional world outside of high school. This is a leadership experience unlike any other, and alumni take this experience and apply it to wherever their endeavors take them.

The conference is held each year at UNH Durham, and consists of interactive sessions in a small group format.  Each student will spend most of the day in a Socratic seminar-style discussion led by student facilitators from the HYPE leadership schools.  Each group consists of between 8 to 12 students who come from various schools in the New England region.  We hope to see you soon!
